The race to define the next generation of artificial intelligence has intensified as Anthropic enters a crowded market with a distinct strategic pivot.
The company has introduced Claude Duet, a new application designed specifically for professionals and small businesses. This move places Anthropic in direct competition with a growing list of rivals, including Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo. While the landscape is saturated with personal and productivity-based assistants launching weekly, Anthropic is betting that a focus on enterprise utility will capture user attention. The core premise of Duet is to automate and manage complex tasks rather than simply answering questions.
A key element of this strategy is a deliberate distinction from consumer-focused agents. Anthropic has clarified that Duet is not intended for handling personal errands, such as booking tickets, nor does it offer a live view of its browser activity. This contrasts sharply with tools like Instinct, which are built around personal assistance. Instead, Duet aims to function as a professional partner, capable of building daily briefings, creating data dashboards, and suggesting actions based on user-specific information. This focus suggests the company believes the immediate value for its target demographic lies in operational efficiency rather than personal convenience.
The operational model of Duet follows the emerging standard for autonomous agents. It is capable of executing tasks in the background within its own virtual environment, allowing users to continue with their day while the agent works. It will return to the user only when a decision or approval is required. This asynchronous workflow is designed to minimize interruption, a critical feature for busy professionals who need productivity tools to fit into existing schedules without constant oversight.
This launch coincides with a broader industry shift from passive AI assistants to active agents that work on behalf of users. Many of Anthropic’s competitors are adopting similar business-focused approaches. For instance, while Meta’s Muse serves as a personal assistant, the company has also released a version tailored for small businesses with deeper app integrations. Similarly, OpenAI’s Dots features a business orientation through its connections to professional tools. Anthropic is entering this specific niche with a product built from the ground up for that purpose, rather than adapting a consumer model.
Under the hood, Duet is powered by the Claude Opus 5.5 model. A significant selling point is its connectivity; the agent can link to over 6,000 connectors and plug-ins available in the Claude Marketplace. This extensive integration capability is crucial for a tool meant to manage workflows, as it allows Duet to interact with the various software ecosystems that businesses already rely on. The agent also possesses the ability to make online purchases on behalf of users, utilizing Stripe’s Link digital wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay.
Despite its autonomy, Anthropic has implemented guardrails to manage risk. Sensitive actions, particularly payments, require explicit user approval. Notably, the company has drawn a line regarding financial transactions, stating that Duet will not trade securities or move money between different accounts. This limitation appears designed to address common concerns about agent overreach in financial management, offering a middle ground between full autonomy and manual control.
Security remains a paramount concern for any agent handling business data. To address this, Anthropic has introduced a new classifier that scans every message to prevent the leakage of sensitive information. By default, the agent is programmed to decline requests for credit card numbers or government identification documents. This proactive approach to data privacy is likely a response to the heightened scrutiny facing AI tools that operate within professional environments.
Claude Duet is currently available in a research preview stage. It can be accessed as a native app on iOS and Android, or via the web through Claude.ai. Access is restricted to Pro and Max customers, and prospective users must join a waitlist to gain entry. This phased rollout allows Anthropic to gather feedback and refine the agent’s performance before a wider release, a common tactic for major AI companies testing new paradigms in the market.
